The Climate Education in an Age of Media (CAM) project at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (http://cleanet.org/cced_media/index.html) invites you to two 3-day summer workshops for secondary and post-secondary science educators to combine student-created media production and climate science. Join us at one of the two workshops : June 26-28 at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) Media Arts Studio OR July 9-11 at the Media Center, University of Massachusetts, Lowell campus.

Think Garden

KET has released a new resource that we think those of you who are planning school gardens will definitely want to show your students. Think Garden is a collection of video segments (and soon to be other ancillary materials/interactives) that teaches elementary students about the art and science of growing food, with an emphasis on biological and environmental concepts. It also addresses topics related to nutrition and economics. Just sign in to KET Teacher’s Domain and start watching.

National Association for Interpretation (NAI) Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) Train the Trainer Course: Mon, June 10th – Fri, June 14, 2013. Shawnee Summer Environmental Educator Institute: Southeastern Illinois College (SIC) will be planning and implementing a Shawnee Summer Environmental Educator Institute with a tentative location of Dixon Springs Agricultural Center (to be confirmed soon). The two day event, set for Fri, July 19th – Sat, July 20th, 2013, will offer several nationally known environmental ed curricula trainings, resources and more! These include the Leopold Education Project; Food, Land and People; Facing the Future, Population Connection; and Project Learning Tree (PLT).  Save the date, more info to follow.

Call for Teacher-Collaborators for Research Project

BSCS (Biological Sciences Curriculum Study) is reviewing applications for 35 science teachers (grades 9-12) to field-test an online graduate course. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), “Energy: A Multidisciplinary Approach for Teachers (EMAT)” is a graduate-level professional development course for teachers that is focused on energy-related concepts.

Kentucky State Parks Announce Family Adventure Quest for 2013The Kentucky State Parks is in its eighth year offering the Family Adventure Quest – a trivia and digital photo contest for families or friends in teams of two to six people. The Family Adventure Quest presents a series of trivia and challenges that teams complete by seeking out special places or subjects in various Kentucky State Parks and supplying a photo as the answer. Teams have through Dec. 5, 2013, to complete as many quests as they like. A $15 registration fee gets you the quest booklet, a Kentucky State Parks fleece picnic throw with carry handles, a 2013 Kentucky State Parks Calendar Planner (for first 200 registrants), bonus coupon for one of the destinations involved, and informational materials to help you along your way. Registration forms are available at www.parks.ky.gov (look for the “Family Adventure Quest” button), where you can also peruse the photo gallery of past participants. Photos must be submitted in electronic format on a CD. The challenge ends Dec. 5, 2013

Education Matters: Environmental Education in Kentucky

KET’s Education Matters explores how environmental education helps students master science and other academic content through engaging, hands-on learning experiences that demonstrate ways in which their choices and actions affect the world around them. Panelists include Elizabeth Schmitz, Kentucky Environmental Education Council; Sean Elkins, Kentucky Department of Education; Tresine Logsdon, Fayette County Public Schools; and Dr. Melinda Wilder, at Eastern Kentucky University.

Bioenergy Institute for Educators ~ Wisconsin

Join the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) for their 2013 Bioenergy Institute for Educators at UWMadison. The intensive six-day program will feature tours of research labs, hands-on experience with education materials, and collaboration time with other educators from across the country. Teams of 3-4 educators (teachers, curriculum coordinators, etc.) are encouraged to apply. Each participant receives a $500 stipend and classroom materials.

Six sessions on the how and why of composting. Participants will learn about Fayette County’s waste stream from Esther Moberly (Division of Waste Management), about organics in our waste stream from Joanna Isaacs (Bluegrass PRIDE), and about why composting helps build soil from Krista Jacobson (University of Kentucky Sustainable Agriculture).
